Can't. resist. need. to debunk, musical mythology... (sorry Rosie, Love you!)
While Johnson was "renowned for his... creation... of the blues" this is just not really accurate. This presupposition has more to do with his posthumous canonization by the likes of John Hammond and Eric Clapton than his popularity during his lifetime. During his career Johnson was a regional star at best, selling a ballpark total of 5000 records. Johnson emerged as one of the last of a generation of rural blues performers, recording in 1936 and 1937, more than a decade after the rural blues first came to national attention by way of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s 1926 recordings for Paramount. Despite his late appearance on the scene and relative obscurity among his contemporaries, Johnson’s work can still be considered distinctly representative of the rural, particularly the rural Delta blues tradition but "father" or inventor he was not.

All that said, THIS IS A KICK ASS DRINK (and a fantastic blog post to boot!)
